The idea for GoHalalPlanet started when Kevin Miller, an American Muslim blogger residing in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, created a webpage devoted to halal restaurants in Saigon. This page became popular with Indonesian and Malaysian Muslims visiting Saigon for the first time. After meeting with Indonesian Muslims in May, 2011, Kevin decided to create a separate website devoted to Halal travel in Vietnam. October, 2011, was the initial launch date for GoHalalPlanet.com.

Goals for GoHalalPlanet
GoHalalPlanet aims to help promote halal travel for Muslims wanting to visit countries around the world. GoHalalPlanet will break down its goals in three phases:
Phase 1
GoHalalPlanet will list all of the restaurants identifying as halal in all countries under the following categories:
1. Owner – will identify the ethnicity and religion of the owner
2. Chef/Cook - will identify the ethnicity and religion of the chef/cook
3. Halal – will identify where the halal meat originated
4. Alcohol- whether the restaurant serves alcohol or not
5. Business hours
6. Delivery
7. Website
It is assumed that most Muslims will make their decisions about which restaurant to visit, or not, by the information included above.
Hotels that are recommended by Muslim travelers will also be listed during this phase. We hope other Muslims will send us their recommendations as well. We will also start offering some Halal Travel Services in certain countries, such as Vietnam, such as airport pickup and catering. Local tour agencies will be used to provide touring packages in various countries as well.
Phase 2
During Phase 2, GoHalalPlanet will visit all of the halal butchers providing halal meat in to restaurants and stores. We will then match the halal meat providers to the restaurants and shops. Local and Expat Muslims will help determine which restaurants are halal.
Hotels will be selected during this Phase based on recommendations of Muslims. We will start to provide hotel reservation services as well as expand our Halal Travel Services.
Phase 3
Phase 3 will be the most important for GoHalalPlanet. All of the hotels, restaurants, shops, etc., that meet Phase 2 requirements will start to receive a GoHalalVietnan/GoHalalPlanet certificate and registration number to help Muslims identify these establishments as being halal. GoHalalPlanet will start to offer countrywide tours, with Muslim tour guides, during this phase.
